« I wanted to take a moment to share a synthesis of the unforgettable odyssey I experienced aboard the Belleespoir, sailing from Malta to Chania with a vibrant group of individuals from across the Mediterranean. We were a rich blend of cultures and nationalities: two Georgians, one Romanian, four Egyptians, one Moroccan, four French, two Palestinians, two Lebanese, one Bosnian, one Italian, ten crew members, Marion, Father Thomas, and myself.

My journey began in Malta, where I was welcomed with incredible generosity by John Claude Attard. From the moment I arrived at the airport, his hospitality stood out. His kind gesture of offering me a book on Mediterranean theology added profound meaning to my stay. Thanks to Gabriel, Sarra, and Jean-Claude Attard from the Maltese diocese, I had the opportunity to learn about the island’s migration challenges as well as the richness of its history. The fascinating stories about the Order of Saint John gave powerful historical depth to my time in the magnificent city of Valletta, where architecture and the legacy of centuries past reveal themselves at every corner. The Mass we celebrated at the majestic St. John’s Co-Cathedral was a solemn and moving moment, a true spiritual connection in a place filled with memory.

Then the adventure at sea began, bringing its share of challenges. The first days of sailing were marked by seasickness, which affected us all. Adjusting to the boat’s constant motion required both physical and mental adaptation. Despite this, we learned to support each other and face the constraints of life at sea together. Resource management was crucial: we had to ration water and food, ensuring that every crew member had what they needed to continue the journey in the best possible conditions.

The sailors on board were invaluable. Their warm welcome, patience, and immense expertise made the experience all the more meaningful. They taught us essential lessons in navigation, helping us understand the wind, the ship’s workings, and the need to respect the harmony of the sea. Their commitment and dedication did not go unnoticed. What particularly touched me was their way of celebrating each other’s birthdays. We had the joy of celebrating two crew members while at sea, and witnessing this maritime family honor these moments with simplicity and joy was deeply moving.

The captain, calm and composed, inspired confidence. His humility and attentiveness to his crew were admirable. Highly experienced, he led the ship with wisdom and a reassuring presence, while making sure everyone felt involved and safe.

Living on a ship with a large group was a real challenge for me, especially as an introvert. Sharing a confined space and being constantly surrounded required me to step out of my comfort zone. But gradually, I learned to appreciate these moments and connect with others in a new way. Deep and sincere conversations were a revelation, giving me the opportunity to explore different perspectives and personal journeys. In the end, this closeness allowed us to form genuine bonds and made the adventure even more enriching.

Our “team times” were precious moments where we could engage in profound discussions, share our perspectives, and learn from one another. Despite our differences in opinion, these conversations were marked by respect, attentive listening, and a genuine desire to understand each other. It was fascinating to see how, over time, our views of the world expanded and evolved.

We also enjoyed moments of pure joy: swimming in the vastness of the sea, sharing our traditional dances, and being amazed by the grandeur of the landscapes — from towering mountains to infinite horizons. Upon our arrival in Chania, our ship drew the attention of the locals, who were curious about our mission. These interactions gave us the chance to share our commitment to peace in the Mediterranean. We danced Cretan choreographies, explored the city’s rich history, and admired its architecture, a testament to the many civilizations that shaped it.

This journey left a deep mark on me. It taught me to look beyond differences and to appreciate the wealth of authentic human exchange.

With heartfelt thanks for this unforgettable experience »
