“Sailing for thirteen days around Cyprus aboard the Bel Espoir was more than just a journey at sea—it was a journey inward, toward community, dialogue, and shared humanity. Together with 25 inspiring people from across the Mediterranean and a French crew of 10, we created a space that honored each other's identities, values, and stories. As a Palestinian, I felt seen and embraced by individuals who shared my values and were genuinely eager to learn about my culture, history, and daily reality.
Life on board was both challenging and magical. We learned how to sail, how to navigate not only the waters but life together. I deeply appreciated the warmth that started to surface after just a few days—the family feeling that formed organically as we cooked, danced, swam, laughed, and prayed together. Fr. Alexis played a key role in shaping this spirit of reflection and connection, especially through our “team times,” where we explored themes like “what constitutes a Mediterranean character” and “the role of women in the region.” These moments grounded us, helped us listen more deeply, and sparked meaningful conversations.
I especially treasured our daily masses and shared prayers with our Muslim friends. The theme of “religion in dialogue” was lived and felt, not just discussed. It brought me closer to the people who swam beside me, shared meals with me, and held space for joy and vulnerability alike. Sharing my culture through dancing and cooking Makloubeh was met with such joy, and I in turn was moved by their music, dances, and traditions.
Even when our destination to Lebanon was canceled due to political tensions, we remained united. We transformed disappointment into new adventures: hiking, navigating, reflecting, and rediscovering peace in the smallest moments. What touched me most was the love I was not prepared for—the kind that is born from mutual respect and shared purpose.
My takeaway is this: despite the differences in language, religion, and background, we found unity. I believe more people should travel, not just to see new places, but to seek the peace that exists between us all—the peace we all long for. »
